Education

     Level of education is probably the main advantage of the Slovak Republic. The high level of general education and long tradition in engineering offers high quality of the labor force and its inclination to training.This fact has been confirmed by many foreign companies established within the region, which have not had any problems finding a skilful workforce.

     There are about 130 secondary vocational, grammar school and vocational training centers with about 32,000 students in total. Pupils in the primary schools have to learn one foreign language and students in the grammar schools have to study two foreign languages. The most widespread are English and German.

     The high level of Slovak education has been proved by many successes in international competitions.
     Kosice, the center of Eastern Slovakia, is an important center of science and research. There are three universities and other faculties with about 16,000 students in total, and the number is increasing every year. Technical University in particular has very good partnerships in the research and development field with many companies within the region.

BASIC EDUCATION

     City of Kosice with 240 thousands of inhabitants offers strong educational opportunities. There are more than 500 kindergartens and 350 primary schools. Two of the kindergartens offer education/whole-day-conversation in English language. Most of the primary schools have teaching of two foreign languages (most spreaded languages are English, German, French and Russian). In some of the primary schools there is education in Hungarian language.


SECONDARY EDUCATION

     Pupils at the age of 15 to 19 years can visit secondary-grammar schools (there are 29 of them in Kosice), called gymnasiums that prepare pupils for the study at the universities or secondary vocational schools (58) or secondary vocational apprentice training centres (62) aimed more for education of specialists for near every industrial branch. Several of the gymnasiums have bilingual sections and education is provided primarily in chosen foreign language. For pupils at the age 5-18 years there is Quality School International (QSI) with education provided in English language. Lessons follow American educational schema. UNIVERSITY EDUCATION

     From the university education point of view we can say, that City of Kosice is Mecca of universities in the Central European Area. There are more than 16,000 students. Technical University of Kosice

Directly in the city there are 3 self-standing universities:

Technical University of Kosice with faculties of mining, ecology, geo-technologies, mechanical engineering, metallurgical, electro-technical and informatics, civil engineering, production technologies, faculty of arts and design, economical faculty, faculty of aviation (former Military Academy of Aviation of lieut. M.R.Stefanik).
University of P.J.Safarik has medical faculty, faculty of natural science, law faculty and faculty of public administration.
University of Veterinary Medicine

In Kosice there are other institutions of higher education:

Economic University of Bratislava, Faculty of Business Economics in Kosice

Other detached extensions of universities are in other towns of Eastern Slovakia i.e. in Spisska Nova Ves, Michalovce and Roznava. In the region there are 7 detached extensions of Slovak Academy of Sciences and 26 other institutions of applied research.
