Kosice region

Kosice Region is situated in the south-east edge of the Slovak Republic. Its area covers 6,753 km2, i.e. 14 % of the territory of the Slovak Republic. Presov and Banska Bystrica Regions are in the north and west, Hungary in the south and Ukraine in the east.

Territorial and administrative division

Kosice Region is administratively divided into 11 districts. Four districts (Kosice I, II, III, IV) are in the City of Kosice, while the other districts are Gelnica, Kosice - Surroundings, Michalovce, Roznava, Sobrance, Spisska Nova Ves and Trebisov.
Residential structure of the Kosice Region is based on 442 municipalities, out of this number 17 are represented by towns (Gelnica, Kosice, Moldava nad Bodvou, Medzev, Michalovce, Strazske, Velke Kapusany, Roznava, Dobsina, Sobrance, Spisska Nova Ves, Krompachy, Spisske Vlachy, Trebisov, Cierna nad Tisou, Secovce, Kralovsky Chlmec).

The regional capital is the city Kosice with 236 thousand inhabitants, which is the administrative, industrial, business, economic, educational, cultural and historical centre of the East Slovak territory. By its population Kosice is the second largest town in Slovakia after the national capital Bratislava.

Urbanization

Some 56.5 % of population of the region live in towns, out of it almost one third in the city of Kosice. The lowest level of urbanization is in the districts of Kosice - Surroundings (13%), Gelnica (21%) and Sobrance (27%).
